The article discusses the early stages of the history of Medieval Livonia, during which it was involved in external expansion from neighboring countries. Along with the German invasion, which is well known due to the popular concept of the “Drive to the East”, the development of Podvinye, Zachudye, Northern Estonia, coastal islands, Finland and the Neva basin inhabited by pagan tribes, besides the Germans, Polochans, Lithuanians, Novgorodians, Danes and Swedes, who caught themselves in a state of fierce competition, also claimed. The most successful were the efforts of the Danes and Germans, who finally laid the foundations for Livonian nationhood. Among the prerequisites for success were a higher level of mobilization resources than other combatants had, thanks to the support of the Papacy, as well as the development of economic, administrative, and fortification systems in the occupied territories, accompanied by the Christianization and subjugation of the local population. These methods were more effective than the “soft colonization” by Polotsk, Lithuania, and Novgorod, as manifested in poliudie (collection of tribute), and did not contribute to the consolidation of a foreign element in the territories of future Old Livonia.
