From the end of the 15th century, within the Russian-Hanseatic trading space, some tradesmen conducted business in violation of Hanseatic customs. The article analyzes mentions of water and land transport means contained in documents and materials of participants in the “unusual trade” from the funds of the Tallinn City Archive; the diary of Samuel Kikhel; report by Thomas Southam and John Sparke; Tonny Fenne's conversational dictionary. The information obtained is correlated with archaeological and ethnographic evidence based on materials from Novgorod customs books of the second half of the 16th – early 17th centuries. Conclusions about the features of wheeled, sliding and water transport usage are made.
